The Mission

For Mama, on her 90th birthday

Don't you love to hear yourself think?
Isn't it great to just listen to the quiet—
And be at home, and at peace with yourself?
Peace brings joy to add to your diet.

Peace and Joy make great companions,
They will tell you things you never knew.
Bake some cookies, put on the coffee.
They would love being friends with you!

Peace and Joy come to my place every morning.
We share some coffee, maybe a song or two,
They read my poems and give me ideas.
I suggested that they go and visit with you.

Just know that I sent them on a mission
Since I can't come to hug and kiss you.
For I want to just hold you and cry,
Tell you that I love and miss you, too.

You should be proud of your ninety years.
Though miles apart, part of you is always with me,
There are things in my heart I will always keep.
It's hard to write through tears—I can barely see.

Happy Birthday, Mama
